Will the £150m Port Plan for Southampton go ahead?

Plans for a £150m expansion bringing 2,000 jobs is due to be announced shortly. Red tape and legal challenges are the main reasons for delaying the expansion in the size of the berths at the container terminal, designed to maintain the competitive nature of the port and safeguard 800 direct jobs and 1,200 indirect jobs.

They include:

  • Combining the existing berths 201 and 202 alongside an upgraded 500m quay wall.
  • Dredging and upgrading the current deep-sea berths, 204 to 207, to accommodate the increased length of container ships.

A rival expansion plan to the port of Felixstowe was forced into a reassessment on environmental grounds, and a further delay to the Southampton bid could see the “window” of September to March (due to migrating Atlantic salmon) being missed.

Did you know Southampton Docks are

  • Home to the UK's second largest container terminal handling more than 1.5 million tons each year
  • Handles over 650,000 vehicles each year
  • Offering 23 container trains a day with gauge clearance for 9'6" high containers to major cargo-generating regions in the Midlands, North West, East Coast, and Scotland.
  • The key maritime position on the UK's south coast, close to the main international shipping lanes and less than 100 nautical miles from mainland Europe.
