Ofsted Praises Hampshire

An Ofsted report published on Friday (12th August 2011) praised the work of Hampshire County Council's Children's Services Department which helps keep children and young people properly safeguarded and provides quality services for children in care across Hampshire.

Hampshire County Council and its partners have achieved 'outstanding' or 'good' judgements for all 22 areas of Ofsted's recent inspection of safeguarding and looked after children services. The inspection is a three yearly intensive review of services for the most vulnerable children including a strong focus on child protection.

Front line social workers handle around 3,000 contacts per month in relation to children and young people in need and those who are at risk of harm. This represents a significant level of demand which is well managed by experienced and qualified staff.

Work with voluntary sector organisations is particularly good, they said with co-ordination through 'an outstanding alliance'.

Youth offending services are robust and the numbers of children offending and reoffending in the county have substantially reduced in recent years as the direct result of effective joint working with police and targeted youth services.

Cllr Roy Perry, The Executive Member for Children's Services, said: “I am delighted and proud that we have passed it with such flying colours. I am especially pleased because it comes after what has been a very difficult period in which we have had to make some very hard financial decisions. This inspection strongly vindicates those decisions. "
