Governmental announces funding for Southampton.

£8,420,000 of Government funding has been set aside to deliver superfast broadband to rural and hard to reach areas in Hampshire, including Portsmouth and Southampton, and the Isle of Wight.

Around 50,000 households and nearly 7,000Hampshire businesses are in broadband ‘not spots’. They currently have very slow broadband speeds of 2 Mbs or less. (Megabits per second).  In addition, there are an estimated 64,000 households in the neighbouring areas that could also see improvements to their broadband service.

The funding pot is part of the Government's drive to ensure that 90% of homes and businesses in the country have access to superfast broadband by 2015.  The funding is to target areas that are unlikely to be upgraded through existing market forces.
Hampshire County Council wants to close the ‘digital divide’ which sees urban areas receiving superfast broadband but rural villages just half a mile away getting little, or no, internet access.

Lavinia Newman, Founder of ABDS says:

“In times of financial constraint it is important to invest in projects such as this because of the long term benefits they can bring. By getting involved in the delivery of superfast broadband for areas that would otherwise not benefit, Hampshire County Council will help rural residents and business have better access, reduce inequality and enable public services to reduce delivery costs as well.”
