Time off for ante-natal appointments extended to fathers

On 1st October 2014, the law relating to time off for ante-natal appointments is changing. Currently, only pregnant women have a right to take paid time off work to attend an ante natal appointment. Fathers generally take annual leave, or use time off in lieu when accompanying their partner to these appointments.

Lavinia Newman, founder of ABDS comments:
“The changes apply whether the baby has been conceived naturally or through donor insemination. The right extends only to a maximum of 2 ante natal appointments - generally, a woman will have 10 appointments throughout her pregnancy - and to a maximum of 6.5 hours for each appointment. In all cases, the time can be unpaid. In all cases the appointment must be made on the advice of a registered medical practitioner, registered midwife or registered nurse.”

The following will be entitled to time off to accompany their partner to an ante natal appointment:

  • The baby’s father;
  • The pregnant woman’s husband;
  • The pregnant woman’s civil partner;
  • The pregnant woman’s partner (different sex or same sex partner living with the woman in an enduring relationship but is not a relative of the woman);
  • The intended parents in a surrogacy situation who qualify to apply for a Parental Order and have applied/intend to apply.
