Olympic torch in Southampton

Olympic Games organisers announced more than 1,000 villages, towns and cities around the country where the Olympic flame will be carried by 8,000 “inspirational torchbearers”, half of whom will be aged 12- 24.

The dates are from 19th May to 27th July 2012, during the 10-week relay, the torch will be carried by 8,000 torchbearers and will travel about 8,000 miles culminating in a procession down the River Thames to Olympic Park for the opening ceremony.

The torch will be stopping overnight in Southampton on July 14 (Day 57), where huge celebrations are planned.

The torch will be carried to Southampton from Bournemouth before continuing to Jersey and Guernsey and then on to Portsmouth the following day.

Between 10,000 and 30,000 people are expected to come to Southampton to celebrate its arrival on the plum weekend date, which will climax with a spectacular evening extravaganza.

Organisers are planning a two-hour evening stage show featuring Olympic-themed entertainment and a cauldron that will be set alight.
Mayflower Park has been earmarked as a possible venue and focal point for the day’s activities.

A dramatic waterborne arrival of the flame from the Isle of Wight is being planned.

In Hampshire the county council is co-ordinating with district and city councils to help bring in more tourism during the Games by highlighting famous and historic links, such as Titanic’s ties to Southampton and Jane Austen’s Winchester connections.
